Title: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About QDE (Questioned Document Examiner) But Were Afraid to Ask

Abstract

Forensic document examiners help their clients to solve enigma such as: Is the signature genuine? Which process was involved in the forgery: disguise or simulation?  Was the document altered?  How many instruments were used? Who signed first?  Who is the author of the anonymous note? Are those writings done from the same hand? etc.

This lecture presents an overview of the challenges facing the forensic document examiners and tries to answer the basic questions related to their work, standards and protocols used. The presentation will highlight how pattern recognition and automatic tools could be helpful in analyzing handwriting related to personal characteristics and in showing the effects of intoxication (alcohol and other drugs), aging effects on handwriting and signature, diseases and handwriting, different kinds of tremors, and the unsolved mystery of crossing strokes.
